Maintaining Weight

Hi all,

I was diagnosed middle of September 2012 as a type 2 (HBAC was 12).

Back then I was weighed by GP at a shade over 12st so BMI was in his words "perfect" for an adult male. Since then I've had to cut out almost all high carb food and things like chocolate and beer to get my BS numbers down. Since September I've achieved what I think is good BS control (5/6/7 on a meter) but lost 9lbs in weight. I'm a little concerned that this weight loss trend wont reverse or level out. I'm taking 2 x metformin tablets a day with 10 mins on exercise bike.

Does anyone else have experience of maintaining weight?

Thanks

Nik

Hi Nik, try eating nuts, peanut butter (sugar free - I eat it with a spoon!) cream, cheese, avocados, eat the fat from the meat. I love snacking on walnuts, almonds, cashews and when I do my weight loss stalls

Hi. I wouldn't worry about the weight loss unless it continues and takes you below the 'normal' BMI range. Don't forget that a large number of people in our population are now overweight and the new 'normal' tends to be overweight as a result. If the weight loss does seriously continue then if you are young then there is always a small possibility of you being a late onset T1, but I suspect the weight loss will slow down and you will settle to a comfortable level. BTW I'm 9.5 stone at 5' 6" - slightly underweight but I'm very comfortable with it. You shouldn't need to cut down beer as a diabetic; in general alcohol has little effect on blood sugar and can sometimes reduce it.

thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

i guess the occasional alcoholic drink wouldn't hurt but i'm a little nervous as i wondered how it would react with the metformin and the statins that i'm taking!

when i first attended GP he had a conversation with hospital as to whether i am type 1 or type 2. the concensus was type 2 as my BS levels were up and down. the problem was they had no data (weight) on me as i'd not seen a doctor for many years as been fit and well until now. i'm late 40s. what is late onset?

thanks

Nik
