Anonymous question submitted:

I'm Type 1 D taking Humalog, Lantus (split) & Carb Counting.

When I go out for a drink and to see a gig at our local I would have a sandwich before I go out then while I'm out I would have 3/4 pints of bitter then maybe a short. I would also maybe have a packet of crisps while I'm out & also a bit of supper when I'm home. I test my BS while I'm out, before bed and the next morning but they always seem to shoot up sky high into the teens until I do a correction then they return to normal.

Please can you tell me
1. why do you think this is
2. what would you do in my situation

It's putting me off ever going out plus if this happens after just one night what will I do when I've got a holiday for a week/2 weeks?

Do you take any insulin whilst you are out? Sandwich plus beer plus crisps makes for a lot of carbs. I'm not a beer drinker but I do love a cider or 3 but I do have to take insulin for it or I go sky high. Generally wine has a far lesser effect on me and shorts (with diet mixer) means that I will probably need carbs before bed.

In your situation I would either bolus for the carbs whilst out then make sure I eat before bed or stick to shorts (although yo can never 100% trust the person behind the bar to use diet mixers, especially on holiday) test fairly frequently and be prepared for correction doses.
