Hi all. I have posted a few times re my bg levels changing due to medications. I am now off all medications and have been for four days. The recent medicine was mirtazapine and I took this for six days before stopping due to high sugar levels. I upped my lantus to try to bring it down but it didnt have any effect. I took 2:10g ratio of QA for all meals and 1:1 to correct. They still didnt move and remained in 25mml region. So I came off them. This morning I checked levels and they were 19.9 mml. I have had a carb free day because im so sick of high levels. They are now 13.8, which is near the target my dsn gave me. I am planning on some carbs for tea and hopefully will respond to 1:10g ratio now they are lower. Any advice going forward? Seeing my dsn on friday but she does not like low carb diets yet I think it must work. Thanks.

Try having a walk after tea as this will help reduce your bg levels, as said before your best to do some basal fasting checks to determine if your basal insulin is set at the right dose, but you need to do this in stages and avoid food altogether, including low-carb food:

Yes I did this yesterday actually and my basal seems to be ok as I called the nurse to chat through it. It seems pretty stable. Thanks

Good stuff, then look at your insulin to carb ratio's with your DSN, it make take days to get the meds out of your system so hold on tight, but do keep in mind that exercising is so beneficial when it comes to lowering bg levels, discuss this when yo next meet up with your DSN.

You could try doing 'reduced' carbs for a while - say 150g/day. This would help in working out your ratios and should reduce fluctuations as you won't be taking so much insulin. Carb ratios change dramatically in very low carb diet, so best to go through a medium carb stage first IMHO.

Good suggestion Rob :)

Yes it is a great suggestion thank you. Went to bed at 20 using a ratio of 1:10 so I must need 2:10 at night too. Levels are 19 this morning so will eat breakfast and try to sort it then. Thanks

Can I just ask, if I do moderate carbs of say 150g a day, do I monitor my calories or still do high fat? Also should I have potatoes etc as part of moderate carbs?

I'd keep an eye on calories. You could use myfitnesspal to check on your carb/fat/protein intake. Potatoes should be OK, but maybe give yourself a 50g carb meal budget. Keep protein at normal levels (0.8g protein per kg of body weight) and make up the rest of your calories from fat.
