The NHS has a very gloomy attitude in general, that T2D can only get worse. This is not automatically true but you are likely to encounter this doom-and-gloom mentality a lot unless you are lucky enough to meet a more enlightened health professional.
Many, many people here on the forum (not me, at least not yet, but I'm trying), have managed to achieve remission (normal HbA1c results without medication) by adjusting their diet, and often increasing exercise.
For some, this doesn't work enough to completely give up medication, which does not mean failure, just that their body needs a bit more help.
