Hi all.

I've been considering a pump now for some time , I have high resistance to insulin , I've managed to get my HBA1C down to 8.5 , but's taken me 7 years , with lots of blimming dangerous hypos. I've seen my own DSN and she don't seem to keen , everytime I ask the subject is quickly changed. I've asked my GP a few times , but I'm sick of waiting now if I'm completely honest. I meet the criteria for a pump , so my question is , after my appointment with my GP next week , if I get no success , should I seek advice myself from the hospital ? I've spoken with them before but are keen on a referal from my own GP , which I really don't think I'll get in a million years , even though he say's hes happy to refer me , he hasn't yet! Would I just get kicked back if I try to contact them myself ?

Thanks

It's certainly worth a try ringing the diabetes clinic direct and asking to speak with someone. When I was under the care of my gp for my diabetes care I asked him for a referral over to the hospital clinic as I was having some insulin related issues, if you go see another gp in the practice and ask them to refer you over they may be more understanding, with your high insulin usage, hypo's and above average Hba1c I can't see how they can refuse tbh.

I saw another GP on Tuesday , all he said was `Your GP would make my life hell if I made a referal without his say so`

Well, that comment would definitely make me see red. It is your taxes and NI contributions that pay your GPs' salaries. You are the consumer here. GP's egos are not your problem!!! Currently I spend little time in UK, so not sure exactly who you should escalate this to - perhaps others can opine. If you can clearly demonstrate against NICE or other formal NHS guidelines that you qualify for specialist referral, then it looks like your GP practice is clearly negligent to not support your request. I hope other forum members can chip in and suggest best escalation route.

Aside from the referral challenges, if you have insulin resistance have you tried adding metformin (glucophage) to your regime? For me it seems to have some slight impact on reducing insulin needs, but regardless my endocrinologist likes it even for Type 1 just for its possible anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties plus it is cheap.
