Medical Exemption Certificate

Mine looks like Sid's, but I've got no idea where it is. I've only had it a few years, though, just used to tick the box on the prescription regardless in the past.

Apparently I have one, well thats the box im told to tick when I pick up my prescription, lol

If you are ticking the box to say you have an exemption cert, and you do not have one then you are signing a false declaration. The penalty is a hefty fine I believe. It doesn't matter that you have the condition but the fact you do not have the cert. Pharmacists do check and if you do not have one then they can rightly refuse to hand over your medication unless you are prepared to pay for it.

Well, they told to me tick that box as im a type 1 diabetic. They keep the prescription, I phone up to order then it gets sent to my GP for him to authorise it.

That's no excuse at all. I assume as you just signed it without reading the form you do this with all forms and letters?
If someone told you to stick your head in a gas oven would you do it?

Here's the info to apply http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/HealthCosts/2095.aspx

Well if you can't trust people who work in a chemist, who can you trust?
One assumes they thought you had a certificate, esp as you signed to say you had one and didn't utter the words sorry didn't know I had to apply I thought it was automatic. But the old adage comes up which is ignorance of the law is no excuse. In theory you could end up paying a lot of money in back prescription charges.

Well when I was diagnosed they didn't say. Theres nothing else that applys to me on the form. Maternity certificate etc....

no idea what form you are on about now if it's the exemption form to fill in then diabetes is mentioned on it. As you have known for a while now you need an exemption cert what have you done about it?

Unless you were diagnosed as a child/teen then you pos were not told as not relevent at the time but if you are under adult care then I suspect you were told and it didn't sink in at the time.
But there is no excuse what so ever not to fill in the forms now.

I was diagnosed at 15 so I ticked the 16,17,18 in full time education. I asked "what do I do now im not in education and im above 18" they said well tick the medical exemption cirt box"

EDIT I was also told all my prescriptions will be paid for even if not diabetes related

Obviously your education didn't teach you to read forms that you sign then did it?
Yes all your prescriptions are free as long as you have an exemption cert.
I'm not going to carry on the discussion as no point. You are in the wrong YOU need to sort it out.

It is true that all prescriptions are covered by a medical exemption certificate but you are only entitled to the free prescriptions if you have a certificate. That's what you sign to say you have and I believe that some checking of this is done - although on a percentage basis.

Regards

Doug

Just pop into your GP and ask him to give one to you.
A new member of staff in my chemist asked where mine was.
Popped down to the GP said I dont recall ever having one and he got one for me.

Seemed they were going through a purge asking you for proof that you actually had one.
That was about two years ago and I have not been asked since.
