Hello everyone, this is my first post having just joined the forum. I am 66 years old, female, and type 2 diabetic, diagnosed October 2005, not having had any symptoms at all. Prescribed Metformin starting 1 per day, then increased to 2 per day, when the diahhorea started, some days very bad couldn't leave the house. After discussion with practice nurse changed to Glucophage(4 per day) plus 1 and a half Gliclazide. Blood sugar levels totally chaotic and high, the only constant in the last 7 years has been the runs(literally!!), At last I have been referred to a specialist who has cut my medication by 50% for 3 months till my next visit. He has reintroduced me to testing my levels again, which my medical practice had told me not to do anymore. Now I can see what my levels are I am worried that things are going the wrong way. My levels are all over the place, even though I am very careful what I eat and when, BUT the diahorrea has gone, Hurrah!!, Has anyone else had a similar experience, and if so do you have any advice to share or wisdom to impart! Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Hi and welcome

Daisy will be along soon to give you the introductory advice for new members. I can't help with the medication side of things, but if you give us some idea of what sort of things you eat then we may be able to suggest some tweaks. The usual 'healthy' diet advised by the NHS is not good for diabetics, l have reduced my carb intake, as have lots on here, this has brought my levels down and my weight!

Thank you Ann for the welcome. I have been totally confused by some of the advice given me about diet etc, some of it changing from practice nurse to practice nurse, and quite often conflicting. During the past couple of weeks I have decided to keep a detailed food diary, and have noticed that potatoes, pasta, etc skyrocket my readings. I am trying to make a diet that is enjoyable and can be sometimes shared by my husband and son, without having to make 3 separate meals!. I also find bread, whatever kind, is not good for me, any suggestions as to tasty meals would be welcome. Thank you.

Hello JG and welcome to the forum ... if as you say, your BG skyrockets when you eat potatoes and pasta ... it sounds like you're quite carb sensitive. I'm the same so I don't eat potatoes, pasta, rice, bread, cake, biscuits and I use this website as guidance for my meals - http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf

I can honestly say that since cutting carbs I've NEVER been hungry, and I've got more energy now than I've had for the past 2 decades. It's worth a go.

I cook a meal and just miss the carby part off my plate. I tend to have cauliflower instead of rice and broccoli instead of pasta. The only potatoes that I eat are either 1 new potato(not very often) or a roast potato cooked in duck or goose fat, the fat slows down the digestion so that it doesn't spike me. The only bread that I eat is an occasional slice of Burgen Soya and Linseed, I keep it in the freezer and defrost 1 or 2 slices every now and then. I think of it as missing the boring bits of the meal and having more of the interesting parts. There are loads of great recipes in the food part of the forum, even chocolate and cake ones!! The almost bounty bars are fantastic! I think they're in the low carb food forum amongst the chocolate paradise thread.
