i have impaired fasting glucose.readings vary from 105 to 120 fi the last 6 months .doctor has put me on metformin 250mg in the morning and 250 mg in the afternoon.is it ok to begin medication? i am 53 years and watching diet and doing moderate exercise.

If you are asking if it is OK to start taking the metformin I suppose it is since the doctor prescribed it. I also think your fasting levels are not that bad so I don't think you should worry.

Hi alamis and welcome to the forum.

Diet, exercise and Metformin are often used in people with pre diabetes. If you get to grips with this regime then it could keep full blown diabetes at bay.

There are two different scales for measuring blood sugar levels mg/dl and mmol/L. The first one is used primarily in America but Britain uses the second.

According to Mayo clinic you will be diagnosed as pre diabetic if your fasting levels are between 100 and 125 mg/dl. To convert these numbers to mmol/L you divide them by 18. So in Britain, possibly 5.5 to 6.9. mmol/L. I have not checked the actual figures used in Britain but they must be somewhere near these.

edited after checking some numbers.

Hi, on your profile you say you are a type 1 on diet only. Could you explain, because you now seem to think you are pre-diabetic? Perhaps you didn't know what type 1 meant?

It would need to be a fasting test and better done by a doctor with access to accurate equipment. If you are using a meter at home then the result will mislead you.

Thank you Grazer, I missed that.
