I'm lucky 'cos my practice automatically give every newly diagnosed diabetic a meter and test strips. I normally test 2 or 3 times a day, and get muttered at a bit for using too many, but haven't yet had my test strips restricted. I do occasionally buy them on ebay so as not to rock the boat too much!
I've recently been on a pain-killing medication that can affect BGs, either up or down, and have had extra test strips without any problem when I said why I wanted them. As I said, very lucky!
I used to test more often when I was working out how foods affect me, but now I'm settled on my modified version of Atkins I know how that affects me, so I don't need to test so much. But I still test after 'treat' foods, or if I'm driving a long way, as well as fasting and bed-time.
For example, I'm having some wine tonight so I shall test before bed to see if I need a carby snack to stop me having an alcohol-induced hypo in the middle of the night. I haven't tried that excuse on the doctor yet!
I couldn't possibly have achieved the control I have without testing. Also, it acts as a frequent reminder to keep me on the straight and narrow. In my opinion, I'm saving the NHS thousands because I don't intend ever to have amputations or go blind (well, from diabetes anyway)!
