Meds for type 2

A friend of mine has recently been diagnosed with type 2, (I’m type 1). We’re both foreigners in China, and unfortunately Chinese doctors are fairly clueless when it comes to diabetes, ( I have first-hand experience of this).
I’ve been able to give him quite a lot of advice as I felt I should learn everything I could when I was diagnosed in 2009, and I also completed the DAFNE course, which is incredibly helpful by the way. But I’m not familiar medicine for type 2 diabetics. He’s been given this medicine and been told told to take one twice a day when he eats (but he usually eats 3 meals a day) regardless of what he eats. I find this incredibly unhelpful as he could eat a lot of rice with his meal and take one tablet, or could have a carb-free meal and still expect to take one.
If anyone has used this and has experience as to how it affects his blood sugar, any advice I could pass onto him would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I tried to post a picture of the medication but it seems I can’t, anyway, he’s been given 0.5g GLUCOPHAGE metformin hydrochloride tablets, manufactured by Bristol Myers Squibb.
 
Maybe get him to join up here and we could advise?
Metformin is usually handed out to newly diagnosed T2's... it can have a mild impact on blood sugars but as you already know food is a far greater influencer. Met can also have some very unpleasant side effects ( I suffered it for 3 weeks before deciding to stop) and T2 can be put into remission without it as many of us can demonstrate.

Very true, through this forum, I learnt how to put my T2 diabetes into remission and stopped metformin tablets.
