Menopausal and effects on blood sugars

Hello Ladies (sorry gents not one for you)

Im wondering whether other women are struggling to keep control of their blood sugars whilst undergoing the change.

I am not taking HRT and have suffered to varying degrees with disturbed sleep due to night sweats and discomfort (and embarrassment) with day sweats. My main concern is that I have been struggling to keep my blood sugars under control since this started and wonder if its linked.

I am quite active and exercise on a regular basis (at least 3 times a week) and always take the stairs instead of the lift etc; however I don't seem as able to cope with food like I used to. I use Novorapid and Glargene. A few years ago my insulin requirement went from years of using 8 to around 16-20 and sometimes that wasn't enough. My diabetic nurse told me to be more varied with sites so im now using more areas but still had a problem. it has now settled back to 11 but I still don't feel in control. Weight wise i'm only couple of pounds different than I have always been at just over 8 st.

Is this happening to other ladies or is my body just giving in?

Hi Marg,
almost certainly the hormones causing the problem. Have you considered HRT? I used it for 8 years after a hysterectomy and now I have stopped using the HRT insulin requirements have gone up by about 8 units.

Nice to know im not alone - the medical team have refused to commit to it being hormonal change so wasn't sure if i was just becoming rubbish at control.

I have considered HRT but as no-one medical has offered it to me i have not pushed as "its just another medication in my bursting cupboard". I keep thinking it will all end soon but have seriously considered it of late.

You can get HRT in a Gel form so just need to rub it in. It does make a remarkable difference to your well being and diabetes control.
Have a chat with your GP and see what s/he suggests.

Yes, things lost any predictability - there was not too much before , but lot worse, did not get too many of the symptoms you mention, though i did increase soya, tofu etc, the main problem was the changed control, though not much increase in insulin even though weight gain, hypothyroid disease, other autoimmune problems, then once i had lost the gained weight plus a little more, it was the problems re using a lot less insulin than i was used to using , more hypo problems, more unpredictability , now still up and down years on and if anything things more difficult now. Hope not the same for you.....

Just a quick question please after reading this. I've just started Hrt but could you tell me who I can phone to complain about this please because I'm not ready yet at 45!
I really need to get this sorted because I'm too bloody busy to deal with this! Hot sweats twice last night. The bed is like a swimming pool.
I have turned into a dazed and confused sweaty minger. So please let me know who I can complain to to get this sorted out asap please.
Weight wise I am lchf so not put any on at the moment but in stressful situations my insulin does increase sometimes massively.
I suppose the upshot is if we weren't growing old we would be dead?
