Is there anyone out there in diabetes land who is going through the menopause? I know it's not the most exciting of topics but I am curious, my periods which have always been regular, have over the last year, got either much closer together or miss completely, I often feel tired, more so than I used to, and the big give away is that I often feel really hot! I have mentioned this to my doctor who said at 47 I am too young to be menopausal! And pretty much dismissed the possibility! I have type 1 (since 1997) can diabetes have any effect on the age of the onset of the menopause, and honestly is 47 too young?

I thought I was starting the menopause when I was about 45, waking up at nights sweating hot, the Dr did a blood test and that was when I found out I had IGT, he said I was not menopausal and the and the hot spells eventually went away. When I was 55 I started the symptoms again, suddenly feeling very hot..... I´d had a hysterectomy 20 years before, so no periods to go by. I saw a gyne Dr here in Spain and she suggested I take soya isoflavones..... Brilliant! Except the price of them here in Spain ( 19€ a month) I now buy them from Holland and Barrett when they are on offer. I take 1 tablet a day (I can take up to 3) no more hot spells, I say no more, very rarely now. I have been taking them for a year now. Hubby asked how many months does the menopause last?
The Dr said to try them before giving hormone replacement, hopefully they will continue working :D

Sunhat,

Hia - we're almost identical in our symptoms and age. I'm 47 this September and have been T1 since 1998. Over the last 6 months my periods have started every 3rd week and I am so tired all the time . I also get very hot normally around 9pm. I haven't been to the doctor about it and have ignored it to date. I'm going to have to go and see about it as my afternoons in work are almost becoming impossible as all I want to do is sleep  So I'm very interested in the answers to this.

Thanks for the replies Riri I find yours most interesting, I would love to know what your doctor says :) and Sunhat it is good to know that there are supplements that can help with symptoms. Xx

All the best and I hope things get sorted for you......and us all :) x
