I have spent ages trying to find somewhere online to get a SAMPLE menu for T2 plus weight loss.
I just find it very difficult to understand the ones where it says "subsitutes" and "amounts of carbs", I just want someone to write out a menu plan with ordinary foods, nothing fancy like zuchinees. Anyone know where I can get some meal plan suggestions? I'm determined to get things under control AND lose some of this weight as well but I'm fast running out of patience (and determination!) I know it's quite a lazy idea wanting someone else to work out my diet for me but I think I'm getting too old to fathom it all out. :? I have the book "Diabetes for Dummies" plus the cookbook - no help at all. Any links or menus you can offer me? :!:
 
Why not try searching this Forum using the search facility.....there are plenty of meal ideas here, low carb/non low carb/lowGI/GL/Vegetarian/Vegan.

What foods do you like to eat? If you give us an idea of where your tastes lie then I am sure we can come up with some suggestions of either tweaking your recipes or similar alternatives.

Also are you testing before and 2 hours after your meals and have you noted what happens to your BG levels and worked out what to cut down or out?
 
The OLD ww food plan that I would usually follow is thus.-

Breakfast - Cereal 1oz - either flakes or oats. with part of milk allowance.

Midday or Evening meal - Poultry, meat or fish 3-4ozs
or Eggs 2 scrambled or poached
" Cheese hard 2ozs
Beverage

Daily at any time - Fruit 3 servings (usually 1 = 1serving)
Vegetables 2 servings ( 3ozs = 1 " )
Milk 1 pint or some can be yogurt
Bread 3 servings (1oz = 1 serving)can be subsituted
by rice, pasta, potato,etc.
Fats 3 servings ( 1 level teaspoon = 1 serving)


Weekly allowances Eggs 4 Hard cheese 4ozs Meat/poultry 3 meals Liver 1 meal.

This is what I tend to have although there are other things inc. in the books suggestions.

What do you think of this regarding db?

Generally the WW diet plan you posted is not too bad but you may find that now you can't eat the starchy carbs. I suggest that you cut those starchy bits out or down according to how your meter says your body is coping with them. Just eat a bit more of the meat, fish, eggs or cheese and loads of (non starchy) vegetables and some fruit. Just make any changes gradually, testing all the while, and you should come up with something that works well for you. We are all different and if that has worked for you in the past if you give it a few tweaks it should continue to work for you. 8)

Get yourself a Collins gem Carb Counter book as that will help you to make good choices. Keep a food diary and note your readings against the meals eaten which will help you to see the pattern and enable you to change your foods.

Unfortunately it will be really hard for me to cut the bread portions. I already have a hard job stopping the biscuit when I have a cup of tea, which I do 90% of the time. Also, as I don't sleep at all well being awake most of the night I often find that I get very hungry. Most times I will have a fruit yogurt but that doesn't always do the job and I crave something more substantial so I will have 4 (1oz) crispbreads with spreadable cheese, often that will then help me to get to sleep. I must admit I have wondered why that is. :?:

Forgive me, but perhaps the answer lies in trying to curb your appetite /cravings and not finding loads of "betes" compliant foodstuffs and recipes?

I take 2 acai berry supplements per day and all my old food cravings (junk food, chocolate, etc, etc) have disappeared. Believe me when I tell you, I had ZERO willpower before taking these, now sticking to "the regime" is a doddle.

Give them a try; you have nothing to lose except weight and food cravings. 8)

diabetes is an individual problem, which ultimately we each have to solve for ourselves. We can make helpful suggestions, but we can't do it all for you. You have to take charge. As to inapprropiate snacks, no-one can stop you other than yourself.
It sounds harsh, but that's how it is.

All great advice so far.......unfortunately Diabetes is a DIY condition each individual has to get to grips with.

Nobody hands stuff to you on a plate. We advise, you digest, then it is up to you to work everything out for what suits you. My diet would probably be of no use to you at all.....bits maybe. We all had to work hard to find what works best for us. In my case it took a month or so by reading what was posted here, some take longer, some quicker. It is all trial and error, no quick fixes........

As synonym says........craving.......has to stop ! Whatever it takes. We are never to old to learn new things either, I'm still learning to this day. Best of luck with your endeavours.

First of all I was gobsmacked as I didn't realise that I had used the phrase "I crave"! And you are so right I don't deny the fact that it is up to me to tackle my problems.

However I have kept to a very low carb programme and am pleased to report that my Bg has gone down to 8.2. and my cravings have diminished considerably.

I am also keeping a log of day - time - bg level - bp - weight.
So far I've lost 2lb plus I feel soo much better in myself now I am not eating bread, etc.

One question - is subsituting bread with savoury oat biscuits okay?

To find this out you would have to test !

I can't eat oats in any form, I get a huge one hour spike from them. You would have to check how they affect you though by testing.
 
Just thought I would give you an update of how things are progressing.
I'm so pleased to say my bg is now 7.2 and have lost 4lbs. Also, the thing I was dreading, the hunger pangs are all but gone. I have been giving a lot of attention to sorting out the pro and cons about carbs etc, and think I'm beginning to get the hang of it.

Just a further update hoping you don't get fed up with me!
Weight down another pound which means I am finding it much easier not only to breath at night but also to get around better. Bg continues at same level. Noticed that oats used as porridge -which I used to have regularly - spikes my bg a lot whereas oatcakes hardly has any effect at all. Very interesting!! So glad that at last I seem to have learnt what it all means, I think it was that I really didn't want to be bothered with learning it, perhaps part of denial. :mrgreen:

Did you try sprinkling cinammon over your porridge?

That works for me in reducing the BG spike.

PS - yes I am fed up with you. :wink: :twisted:

It takes time to re-learn things and, as you indicate, sometimes we really don't want to - very understandably! :roll: When you start to feel better and the numbers go down is when you realise how worthwhile it is.

Well done you and keep on doing what you are doing - test, test, test! 8)
 
Alas! Have to say I defaulted badly today - actually started during the night. As I said, I do find it soo difficult at nighttime when I can't sleep and resistance and endeavour get very low so had a very large helpng of branflakes plus two digestive biscuits. Bg gone up to worst for a long time 12.4. Really annoyed with myself and eyesight typing this is quite fuzzy. I also get itching on my arms which drives me mad. :cry: Weight gone back up to 15st 6lb.
I'm not saying all this for sympathy or anything like that - just venting!
I have so much pain in my back that sometimes I just can't cope with anything else, not being able to sleep just is the last straw. I don't have anyone I can actually talk to and whilst coming on here is better than nothing it's nice to be able to exchange viewpoints face to face, isn't it?
Anyone going to respond would be appreciated but no heavy stuff, PLEASE!
 
A quick follow up - am so pleased that just have done another test and find I was worryijng myself sick unnecessarily - Bg now 6.1!!!! Can go to bed feelimg a lot happier now, best foot forward, as they say!
Plus, havind had a quite hectic day my Bp is very good as well!

So glad that things are not as bad as you were thinking - so onwards and upwards! Don't forget that worrying and stresing doesn't help you. :roll:

For the future I suggest that you have a few standby snacks for those moments when you can't sleep and/or need to eat something and have them ready to eat in the fridge - so that you don't have to wait while you prepare something and then give up and in desperation reach for the biccies! :roll: You could have little squares of cheese, baby tomatoes, celery sticks or a very few nuts and I am sure that you can think of a few other things too.

Has your doctor given you something to help with the pain and is it adequate? If not I suggest you talk to the doctor and get a referral to the pain team at your local hospital as this is really important. If you don't sleep well because of pain this won't help your BG levels and will make it harder to get it down with a knock on effect on your ability to get your weight down.

Let us know how you get on.
