Going onto Metformin is what most of us do and it can help with insulin resistance and reduces blood sugar just a bit. It's a good safe drug so no problem there (ask for the SR version if you have bowel problems with it). Meanwhile do reduce the carbs. If you're having cake go for low-added sugar fruit cake NOT chocolate cake. Get a glucose meter if you haven't got one and see what food affects you and by how much.
