Meter testing

Hi,
I have started a new meds regime, and have noticed that as soon as my meter reads 6.0 or below I start feeling strange like I'm having a 'low'. I'm not sure if this is a side effect, or whether my meter is faulty. So, anybody got a quick way of checking a meter?

If your bg levels have been running high for some time and now you've began to control them you can experience False Hypo's (Google the term).

Thanks for that. I'll still test the meter if I can, but I'll stop worrying about the weird feelings!
 
You could always purchase some control solution for your meter this will check if your meter readings are in range.Perhaps not a quick solution but probably the most accurate test of the meter unless you can check it against one at your clinic or doctors surgery.
 
I thought it was just me. I too get light headed sometimes when my sugar is dropping to the 6's. I just figured it was normal since it was lower than my usual 8-9. I have been testing for a couple of weeks and have drastically reduced my carbohydrates. Oats and Shredded wheat put my sugar up to 15s( no added sugar) after 1hr so I have stopped eat those. After 2 weeks Ive seen 5s and 6s and it does get better. Now hitting 8s rather than 9s and 10s. Good luck.
 
few ways to check if you meter is reading OK

test a non-diabetic (I use my husband as his fasting BG levels are always 5.1 - 5.4, I can loan him to you if your local ;))

ask GP for fasting test (take your meter along to test yourself at same time)

go to local pharmacy (large supermarket) and get them to do a quick BG test and do a test with your own meter at same time. Some will do this for free as they assume you will buy a new meter from them if yours isn't working properly.

Use a testing solution for your specific meter.
