i am type 3c and have recently had a Whipples procedure in which the head of my pancreas was removed. It was in any case calcified so not fully functioning. As expected my blood sugar levels are all over the place. When I saw my GP about this he said I shouldn’t be taking Metformin because my BMI is under 24 ( it is 18 ) . He upped my Gliclazide but this has made things worse and he said I would end up on insulin anyway because of the Whipples. I can find nothing on the internet about Metformin and BMI so has anyone else ever been told of this or heard of this link?

Hi and welcome,

I know nothing at all about Type 3c or how it is treated.

Metformin helps to a small extent with insulin resistance and reducing the amount of glucose the liver produces. It is mainly an appetite suppressant, so works much better on those that are overweight. This maybe your doctor's thinking.

Just as a PS. Your diabetes status under your avatar says you are Type 2. You can change this to Type 3c if you go to your profile settings. With it showing as Type 2 you may receive inappropriate advice.

There is a sub forum for Type 3c here http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/type-3c-pancreatic-diabetes.73/ that you may find useful.

Having researched further, I contacted Diabetes UK and they say there is no correlation between Metformin and BMI so I think the GP is wrong and I have gone back on it.
