Type 2 Metformin and breastfeeding?

My son is almost 13 months old and for 2 months now I've reduced his breastfeeding to only at night. I've been taking insulin for BG control, but my endo gave me Metformin to replace the insulin once done with breastfeeding. I thought the nighttime feeding would cease after a short while, but my son isn't showing any sign of stopping. He refuses to take the bottle at night (during the day he's fine with it).

My question is, is it safe for me to start taking Metformin even though I'm not completely done with breastfeeding? According to diabetes.co.uk, "Metformin, like many medications, may pass into breast milk in very small quantities. NICE also recommend that taking Metformin is safe during breastfeeding." I was always under the impression that it was best NOT to take Metformin while breastfeeding. Are there any mums with experience in this matter? Would love to hear from you.

What does your midwife say? And the hospital?

Hi Scandichic! I get conflicting answers which is why I'm not sure what to do. My endo says it's ok since my dosage would be only 2x500mg but looking at all the info online one reads all kinds of things. I guess I'm too much of a worrywart!

I had to bottle feed mine - not enough milk.
Can I ask how you make up your bottles?
I used to boil a kettle, fill up the bottles with hot water only and leave them on the side. I had a divider which I measured out the scoops of milk into. When it was time for a feed, I just added the measured powder and shook. Could it be that the breast milk is at the optimum temp and the bottle is too cold. Or takes too long to cool down once warmed up and then he gets him wound up waiting? Just a thought?

That sounds like a good method, haven't thought of doing it that way. Thanks so much, Scandichic!

It was our sanity when we were doing night feeds. You get told so much ****. We discovered this by accident and the second time round we were a lot wiser and financially better off! I also used to also buy jars of baby food (my eldest refused all my attempts at home made food) so I bought jars and never once warmed them up! Yes, I am a terrible parent! Yes - I'm bad to the core. The kids are ok though!

Omg, our little one turns his nose up at anything homemade too! The special blender we'd bought was for nothing! We give him jar after jar after jar as well, without warming them up! That's the way he likes it, at the moment at least :)
