metformin and longevity

hello!

I think I read in the news that metformin is a candidate for longevity drug.

Is this true? So would it be beneficial to start taking metformin with prediabetes?

You will NEVER be given that advice as we are not qualified to provide it.
 
From the posts on this site many/most people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are offered Metformin, I certainly was. If you are pre diabetic it is possible you will be offered it. Ask your doctor. As @Mike D says we are not qualified to speak about its benefits.
 
Apparently Drs are reluctant to start patients who are pre diabetic on Metformin but as stated above it is possible you may be offered it. If you are wondering about the benefits ect of Metformin it would be best to do your homework on Google and do some searching.
 
I have a strong sense of deja-vu here. I replied to another thread of yours asking you to clarify your diagnosis - this being down to contradictory prior posts where you said you were a diagnosed type 2, then you had pre-diabetes without diagnosis, as well as very contradictory posts about diet. I didn't see your answer, know it was offensive because it got wiped, and you apparently banned. I seriously am not interested in getting into an argument, but I think it is nothing but fair to ask you to clarify whether you have type 2 or prediabetes?
 
You wouldn't start taking metformin without your doctor prescribing it to you. If you can stay off oral meds it is better to do so as they all come with side effects. I know the claim you're referring to and to me it sounded a bit ridiculous to be making such a claim to the public as it was only a study over 5 years or something... hardly worthy of noting if it increases longevity. There are all sorts of benefit claims being made about this drug but none of the claims have mentioned the side effects it can cause either.
 

But metformin has no frequent serious side effects!
 
I saw in wikipedia that there are no frequent serious side effects
 
I think it really comes down to what you are hoping Metformin will do for you. If you want to start taking it purely for its other so called benefits instead of what it is intended for then maybe your thinking is a bit out of sorts so to speak. If you are only pre diabetic at this stage wouldnt it be more beneficial to work on diet and lifestyle changes now that will certainly benefit you in the long run.

I guess all the reports of people too afraid to leave their houses due to the embarrassing bowel effects of metfartin aren't considered serious? Not everyone gets the side effects, but judging by the amount of posts about it, it appears a considerable amount do.

I beg to differ on that one considering I spent 5 years nauseated and on the toilet and my digestive system has never been the same since and I'm on some drugs now to try and help me. It all started from taking metformin for me. I didn't have a lot of the conditions I now have prior to metformin. It could just be coincidence, but I have my suspicion. Also I just read a study done where they say just 4 years of metformin can cause neuropathy in diabetics. Here's the article link: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/851542

I just think if they're going to talk about benefits, they should equally talk about the known side effects.

Yeah, I'm not holding my breath either. Just judging by the answers alone, there appears to be a wind up going on. We shall see.
