I take several meds to keep my bs low. The meds work great and was told to cut one of my 4 pills in half due to going to low. So, in the beginning 9 months ago I ate strictly for a few months. As time has gone by I found my will power was getting low and eventually returned to eating my normal foods I enjoy. I know my carb intake is crazy high but my blood surgar on meds stay low in spite. I was told though that even if my blood sugar stays low on high carb diet I may still have complications. How can this be if my A1c and blood sugar stays low? I likely have spikes but they go down in a few hours or so I think.

If your HBa1c stays low that's fine and no need to worry. It sounds like your diabetes may currently be minimal but be aware that if you become more insulin resistant the situation may change

No one can tell at what numbers for how long or how often you would get complications, because it's different in different people. I go by the belief that non-diabetic numbers = no complications, but there isn't proof of that.
Also, there are many health care professionals who seem to think that any diabetic with a hba1c around 53 is doing great, even though their bg must be way higher than that of someone without diabetes.

What tablets are you taking? Your profile settings don't say.
What sort of levels do you see when you test, and what was your last HbA1c?

Blood glucose when achieved with medicine only tells half the story. Of more importance is the glucose in every other system besides the blood. Pretty much every cell in your body can become engorged with sugar, and especially so when hypoglycaemic medicines are pushing more and more in. This is why heavily medicated HbA1c has been shown not to improve long term health outcomes. In fact they can make the diabetes worse, despite improving the most commonly measured symptom.

You would be well advised to consider all this very carefully before using medicines to allow unmoderated eating habits. Have a read of The Diabetes Code, written by Jason Fung.

Edited to add that Metformin doesn’t really apply to the above per se, but nonetheless HbA1c is not the best predictor.

I am taking a 1,000 2 x daily metformin and 2 g glipramide 2 x daily. I recently cut one glipramide in half at evening due to going too low at night. I would like to cut meds more but will power is weak at this time.
