have been told by the specialist nurse to start on metformin 500ml twice daily for ten days then to increase to three times daily for another and then up to the final dosage of four tablets after a further ten days.I am reluctant to take the medication at all but if i have to I would like the dosage to be as small as possible. If a dosage of two tablets shows any results(as in my daily testing) why should I increase the dosage until I really have to?

I'd see first what effect the step up to 1000mg has on your blood sugar level and take it from there, ideally in consultation with your nurse. What was this prescription in response to - some kind of change? (eg Hba1c level etc).

Don't see Metformin as some kind of upfront failure - treat it more as a help to reduce with a changed diet.

When someone is at first put on Metformin they are usually 'weaned' onto the medication, starting initially with a lower dosage and if they don't experiance any 'side effects' then the dosage is increased.
Metformin is a first choice in diabetic medications for type2 diabetes control, but that said it doesn't always agree with everyone and there are many possile side effects.
I myself experienced most of them, and a few more besides, but over time I gradually became accustomed to taking Metformin, which I still do.
As I have said, not everyone can get used to Metformin in it's standard form, and as an alternative there is (Slow Release Metformin - SR) which if that prooves to be needed is also available as an alternative, as is many alternatives to Metformin.
If you search this site you will find countless postings by people taking Metformin for the first time. many without any problems..

Hi. Metformin is a good safe drug. It's not a miracle cure and often the max dose is the right choice to help control blood sugar. A gradual increase to the dose helps avoid bowel upset with the SR version available if any bowel upset doesn't clear
