All my diabetic friends take 2 x 500 mg metformin a day, one in the morning and one at night. I take 2x 500mg Metformin in the morning and 2 at night. Why do I have to take so many compared to all my diabetic friends, whose readings originally were much higher than mine? After I have taken two tablets, my stomach seems to swell so much.
Thank You

Basically because we are all different. Your blood sugars were probably completely different from theirs, and your diet and blood sugar response probably will be too.
Ask your GP for a slower release Metformin if you have abdominal discomfort.
Try cutting your carbs as well, that usually helps control blood sugars.

There is no have to about it you take the dose that your doctor recommends and you agree to or you don't it is entirely your decision if you are not happy with the dosage and it's effects on you then discuss it with your doctor and come to a mutual agreement.

Edit to add welcome to the forum and to reiterate you have the final say on what medications you take

Hello and welome,

there can always be a variation in the ways that different doctors will treat a particular disease or problem. You need to discuss any recommendation with your doctor and then decide what you will do.

I am on metformin and intend to keep on it indefinitely as it helps suppress the appetite and reduce the amount of glucose that my liver will dump. I don't have any symptoms- I am on the slow release one- one tablet once a day.

In my experience the metformin, while a useful aid, is not the answer alone. I have gone very low arb and that it what has reduced my blood sugar levels.

If they cause a problem talk to your doctor- slow release may help. But as @JohnEGreen said above it is your decision what medication you take- but make that decision with some knowledge and maybe some research. Talk to your doctor- talk to a different doctor, read around this site.

My view alone is that I am happy to keep taking the metformin until I have lost all the weight I want to lose and if I come off it I will be testing regularly to ensure my blood sugars don't rise. I'm not good at taking medication but I would be less good at everything with some of the complications that can happen from uncontrolled diabetes.
