Metformin dosage

I have just had my 6 month check up and the diabetes nurse has cut my metformin from 2 500mg 3 times a day to just 4, even though my blood sugar control is poor, she said any more than 4 doesn't work, is this right?

The max dosage according to NHS is 2000mg

Whether other countries have different dosages, but yes that's correct
