I'm not sure that Metformin ever actually did as much for my T2 as eating a low carb/ketogenic style diet. My GP's decision to stop prescribing it has made not the slightest difference to my long term low pre-diabetic glucose levels.

You can reach 5000 calories a day on low carb if you want to. On low carb you eat what you need, ie not hungry, not losing weight, not gaining weight. Don't put emphasis on Calories, Carbs are what count.
