Hi
I have been diagnosed as type 2 diabetic two years ago. I lost 3 stone initially due to diet and have not been testing my BG levels. I have my HbA1C done every 6 months and it's usually 47/48. I have recently bought a meter and have been testing my bloods for a couple of days. When I wake it's usually 8.1 and around 6pm it's normally around 6.1. I had a teacake for breakfast to see what that would do to my levels and it went to 17.1 !! I have joined a gym and for the last four months have been swimming and exercising four times a week for an hour and cannot lose weight. My question is should I be considering taking metformin?

I think I would cut out the teacakes and see what happens...

My body has decided to react to wheat and grains with ridiculously and disproportionately high blood glucose readings. I tolerate starchy veg better.

So I don't eat grains, and occasionally eat very small portions of starchy veg.

It has done wonders for my blood glucose levels. :)

That is between you and your doctor. We can't advise one way or the other.

However, if you are expecting Metformin to reduce your BS levels by more than a very small amount you are wrong. It helps to a limited extent by helping to reduce the amount of glucose produced by the liver, and can help in reducing appetite and thereby weight loss. What it won't do is stop the post meal spikes. Only diet can do that. It is known as a safe drug and is supposed to have other benefits.

One thing you have learnt - your body can't cope with teacakes!

Thanks.I think I have been a bit in denial until I got my meter. I need to start counting my carbs and doing more research. Onwards and upwards :)
