Metformin or tummy bug?

I'm type 1 but was on Metformin 500mg twice a day as past year for insulin resistance. Last Wednesday my consultant increased it to 1g twice a day.

I've been taking this increased dose since Thursday. Yesterday just after dinner I felt really nauseous, headache couldn't eat etc so went to bed. This morn felt OK. Took my 1g with breakfast and about 1hour later experienced awful tummy cramps, nausea and diarrhoea 5 times in 2hours. I feel weak now.

I know there has been a bug doing the rounds but I'm also worried it's the metformin? Any advice?

It's impossible to say which of those it is, but Metformin does cause those symptoms in some people, and the increased dose may well have pushed you over the edge. There is a slow release version that is kinder on the tummy if it turns out to be the Metformin.
