Metformin side effects

Hi, I contracted type 2 diabetes last February and initially was prescribed 3 Metformin 500mg a day which was OK but in April it was upped to 4 a day, 2 am, 1 midday and 1 in the evening. However this increase has caused extreme flatulence especially after the midday one with loud and smelly 'farts'. How can this embarrassing effect be stopped?

In the past nurses used to get their jollies by administering enemas if you were daft enough to go anywhere near a hospital but this practice was discontinued when it was discovered that it was killing people.

I think that dishing out Meformin has just replaced enemas and this possibly cheers up an otherwise dull day for your average HCP. I am still not convinced that they do anything.

However to your question. The only way to stop it is to tell your HCP that you are experiencing an undesirable side effect that you cannot put up with and get the dose reduced. This is what I did when they caused me taste displacement. Everything tasted of burnt plastic. You don't have to suffer the side effects needlessly.

You could try cutting carbs if you haven't already done so. I found that the more carbs you eat, the more of this undesired side effect you have.

Just out of interest why were the enemas killing people I've had colonic irrigation before

I understand that some salts are used in the body to help pass signals along nerves and if the patient was already deficient in these then an enema made it worse. For some critical patients it was the difference between life and death.

Maybe a medical person on here could fill in the gaps because I just remember the brief publicity at the time.
