Metformin side effects

Oh my days!!! I feel so ill on this... I am now on 2g a day and I keep getting hypo. Nurse said to drop my insulin further. I have been getting nausea, abdo pain, clearing myself out(if you know what I mean) and all the gp said was is that I got to put up with it and they won't give me anything for the sickness.... I feel I have no control over my body and it's really getting me down... Will these side effects go eventually or do I just have to put up with this? I feel so sick I don't want to even eat dinner

There are two types of metformin, the regular cheap stuff which they will prescribe first and metformin SR which is more expensive but kinder on the stomach. How quickly did you go to the 2g dose? It should be increased slowly over a number of weeks and if you still can't tolerate it, then ask for the SR version.

No use asking me It worried me when my pharmacist said to ring her on a regular basis to see how I was coping. I read the relevant info in the box. And put them in the bin. Not helpful I know. Sorry.

Were you tolerating the 1g dose? If you were then my opinion would be to go back to the 1g dose for a while. It comes in 500mg, 750mg and 1000mg strengths, so you could build it up gradually.

Opalshards, metformin is a good med and it doesn't always give everyone stomach problems, it is a useful tool for insulin resistance and in a Type 2 at maximum dose it lowers blood sugar by 1 -2 mmol.

I was on Metformin and was changed to MR version because of unwanted side effects.......chronic diarrhoea which greatly affected my life.OK for a short while then it
all started again after taking
MR version for a few weeks. Stopped it for a week and it was bliss! Gradual restart but once back up to full dose of 1500mg/day all started again. GP was very sympathetic and changed me to Glicazide then added on Januvia as BM readings were too high. Now have settled somewhat after 2 weeks and only need check BM on alternate days with HbA1c check in six weeks.. Lucky that I have a contact who is lead DNS who keeps an eye on what is happening. Only thing is,the weight is creeping up with the Glicazide but preferable to having to plan my life around toilets!

I for told on Monday morning that being as I was on sr metformin that it was impossible to have problems with it, and that was fron a dn so we had an argument about it and I won as I told her all the symptoms and she agreed in the end I had a problem taking it

Type 2 diagnosed 24/01/2013.
Novomix 30, Victoza, metformin 2000mg sr (but not taking them as they play havoc with my insides,
