I am having a worrying weekend as I cannot access medical advice from my doctor or nurse until Monday, for the nurse, and the end of October, for the GP. My problem is that I was prescribed Metformin three weeks ago when the type 2 Diabetes was diagnosed. I have had really bad stomach pain and diahorrea since starting the new pills but at first thought I was having a flare up of my IBS. Then the nurse told me it could be a side effect of the Metformin. Unfortunately, I couldn't get back to her and she won't now be in till Monday. Worse still, I have since discovered that Metformin should not be taken by people with low blood oxygen. I have COPD and am on home oxygen because my blood oxygen is too low. Should I stop taking the tablets until I can see the doctor? Or persevere until then? Can anyone advise me?

I think that is a mon to fri service, but their is 24 hr nhs advice lines in the UK

after giving advice to ring...If it was me, I'd stop the met till I saw the Dr on mon, if they are ok with copd, you can get a slow release which are gentler

I don't know what diet you are on, but LC/LCHF is the main way to reduce your BG, there is lots of info here and ask lots of questions

I am sure you would be told to stop taking the meds till you see a doctor -- I assume that is what it says on the info leaflet for metformin. Unlike some other meds, metformin doesn't have a dramatic impact on BGs or other functions anyway, so I really cannot imagine that you would be told to keep taking it till you get medical advice.
