Hi burtybob,
Metformin is a first-line treatment for type-2 diabetes, but it is not unheard of for it to be prescribed for type-1s. Metformin helps reduce insulin resistance and also discourages the liver from over-producing glucose, so it can be a useful aid to a type-1 who has either or both these particular problems.
