hi

I have just come back from dn and she is going to put me on metformin in two weeks after I have shifted this virus and chest infection. what I was wandering what is the lowest dose they start you on and is there anything I should be careful of like timing breaks etc

The lowest dose is 500 mg, I would be inclined to take it in the evening or at a time when you are not working. My first day on metformin, I went shopping. I had to find three loo's before I abandoned the trip and went home. I was not warned about the possible stomach problems with it. It doesn't effect everybody like this and if it is a problem then you can ask for the SR version which is kinder but more expensive. You should build it up slowly over a number of weeks to the maximum dose you have been prescribed.

Teddybear, Metformin can cause disastrous problems with needing the toilet really quickly. you can help to minimise these problems by taking your Metformin in the middle of a meal. If you are concerned about these problems, you could take your first few when you know you are going to be home or near a toilet. Some people get away without these problems, you may be lucky. ;)
