I have had type 2 for over 15 years 1 year ago my BS were out of control so my GP put me on 2,000mg per day of slow acting Metformin i also take 2 Gliclazide per day and 10 mg silvastin i suffer very badly visiting the loo 10 times a day I virtually live on Imodium plus is there anything else I could take in place of the Metformin???

Yes I have, but frankly speaking I don't think they have time for this type of problem they wanted me to go n Insulin I refused and went to see an endo consult who put me on a low carb diet which is beginning to help he also out me on a poly glitzazone I think thats how you spell it!! he also told me there was no need for injections and if I lost weight I should not need injections.

Hi Samy,

Unfortunately a GP will have only a fraction of the knowledge that an endo has about diabetes and its treatment. There are loads of alternatives that can (and should) be considered before contemplating insulin.

Some people just can't tolerate it, for this or other reasons. Have you suggested the extended release version? That can be more user-friendly.

Stick with the Endo, he seems to have up to date knowledge.

When I was diagnosed type 2 in 2002 I was put on Metformin 500 twice daily. I have no knowledge whether the Kidney failure in 2004 was connected to the Metformin, but the first thing my Kidney doctor did was to stop the Metformin instantly incidentally they have now stopped my Glicazide 120 twice a day and now I am on Novomix 16 unitsbd and my sugars are nearly in single figures again...

Don't know if this will help I take 30mg Codeine Phosphate along with Imodian Hospital has said to take amatriptylene which is a antidpressant to slow the gut down.

I have had what the hospital calls Rapid digestive transit for years very isolating so I understand
where your at.

Have been on gliclazide now for a month, doc said he would have put me on Metformin but because of
my tummy problems thought gliclazide would be better. fasting glucose has gone from 12.9 to 10.4 and before evening meal varies between 8.2 and 12.1 So the doc's giving me a month to try and get it down before upping my gliclazide. which is making me feel really hungry and I"m craving sweet things which I didn't before.

Hi Nell,

Did your doctor give you any guidelines on exactly how to get your BS levels down?
