Hi
I saw the diabetic nurse for the first time today and she has put me on Metformin.
The dosage is 1 a day for 2 weeks , then 2 a day for 2 weeks then 4 a day ! Is this a normal dosage ? It seems quite a lot as most posts I have read prople are on 2 a day ? X

I think that's the dosage I've been prescribed but I haven't started taking it yet (I'll start after seeing the diabetic nurse at my new surgery next week).

Your doctor will have prescribed what they consider the suitable dose for you. Not everyone has the same diabetic issues, so not everyone needs the same (amount of) medication. It may also depend on the strength of the tablets you've been prescribed.

Metformin can sometimes have a few side effects when first taken. Not everyone gets them but common complaints are upset tummy for the first few days until the body gets used to the medication.
For this reason sometimes the diabetic is weaned onto the medication starting with a low dosage and then the dosage gradually increases as they become accustomed to the medication.
In certain circumstances where the diabetic has difficulty in taking and adjusting to the medication a 'Slow' release version of the same medication may then be prescribed in preference to the 'Standard' issue.

It's the same dosage i was initially given. It started on 500mg per day for first week then after four weeks i was shoved on 2000.mg per day with a weening on process.
I have not been treating this diabetic thing kindly since Xmas period just gone. I'd strongly advize you not to follow my footsteps . I was overconfident that i'd survive but right now i'm going down hill getting drunk and and not eating like a stone age vegan so that's life. Travel safe I wish your journey well

Thank you all .
Sorry to hear that Barry , can't offer any advice as I'm new to this . But do hope you can get it all back together . Thank you and take care x

Sorry to hear bout your sad decline Barry, it's a bitter pill to swallow and I've succumbed to the demon drink myself but as one tortured soul to another " don't let it beat you!" X
