Michael...Newly Diagnosed Type 2

Mike welcome to the forum.My best advice to you is to stick right here with us.Get to know your way round the site.You will learn more here and more quickly than anywhere else.
There is a lot to take in but I assure you it gets easier.
I was diagnosed Type 2 in mid July and just last week had my HbA1c and it is normal at 42 and my cholesterol levels ( there are a few ) are all much better due to LCHF. It works.
Unfortunately the NHS doesn't know this yet, their advice to us ranges from contradictory to downright dangerous.There are plenty here who have gone thru the learning curve you are on and we can advise.
NO question is stupid just ask away.

In quick summary you need to :
Stick around here.
Get a print out of your test results, all of em.You need to know where you started from.
Cut out bread, pasta,rice potato ie carbs which turn to sugar, even the wholemeal ones,as well as the more obvious sugary things.
Get a meter and start testing before and after meals to see what you can tolerate.
Start studying carb content for everything, carbs are the baddies for us.
See how you get on with Metformin , some have initial problems.
Have a look at what we all eat and the recipes for inspiration,it's quite a good eating regime!

Look up each of the above on this forum.

Obviously I cannot give you individual advice as we are all different.But after a couple of weeks I went LCHF as there was and is a definite pattern emerging.
You will start to feel better once your blood glucose levels drop.

Redsnapper is spot on. Nothing to add but good luck and don't be shy about asking questions. People on the forum are amazingly responsive and patient. I found after 2 weeks on a Low Carb, High Fat Diet my energy levels increased significantly.
 
Hi and welcome. After 5 years of diabetes my HbA1c went from.112 to 64 but work still needs done. Getting better is all about education, monitoring, suffering and patience. Pay particular attention to carbohydrates and make sure you are well hydrated. Sometimes the meds can take weeks to have optimum effect. I has been a learning curve for me and the forum has proved useful.
 
Thank You for the welcome and the great advice redsnapper. I am learning more and more each day and adjusting my diet accordingly. It is now day 5 of the meds and diet Change, Still feeling extremely tired. Get meter later this week too.

Thanks Klangley. I have adjusted my diet accordingly,though on day 5 of meds,im still extremely tired. Get meter later this week,so will know more then..
 
Thanks eddie,advice appreciated. Im on day 5 of meds,and have cut the carbs,but still feeling extremely tired..I get meter later this week,so will find out more then.
 

After reducing my breakfast cereal to 50gm with low fat milk, and elimination of rice etc., FBG now 75 mg/dL A1C 5.1%.

Hi, very good fasting levels, but swap your low fat milk for high fat for even better results as higher fat means lower sugar........, better still ditch the cereal and have some bacon and eggs
 
I have now been on 500mg for my first week since diagnosis.The dosage goes up to a 1000mg tomorrow. Do I take that in one dose OR 2 separate 500mg dosages please?

Also Got BG meter now. Had a fasting reading of HbA1c 4.6 this morning, and 5.8 two hr after 40grm of shredded wheat,skimmed milk,tsp slender sugar. MAY I ask, when people ask what your BG reading is,do you give them a average fasting reading? Or a average two hour after meal reading? Thanks...
 

Hi, 2 separate doses is best..................

Your readings are fantastic, pretty much normal (are you sure you are diabetic )

I just give the exact reading, and people will usually ask if its fasting or not, I am not a doctor but TBH with those readings I cant see any reason to take the extra Metformin ..........

And just a personal note so feel free to ignore, would cut out the shredded wheat (wheat is evil ) and switch to stevia or some other natural sweetener ....

Thanks Mfactor. Readings not so good today though. Fasting A1c 5.8 and two hours after All Bran Bran flakes A1c 6.8 .I'm learning all the time. Yes I agree with the wheat and all bran not that good for you,even when you think the fibre is good for you. I have ordered some stevia this morning and some soya milk as I have noticed the sugar and carbs in ordinary milk.

Yes agree with the Metformin,I wont increase. Thanks. Any tips on good foods with fibre in and low carb/sugar? I also need to lower my Cholesterol..
 

Yep your reading are higher today but easily within tolerances ( up to 7.0 normally and up to 8.5 after meals) trust me they are very good,

Tesco to their own stevia which is good value (and Aldi which is penny's )

Yep I try to use soy or almond milk , (soy is supposed to have problems but concentrating on the Diabetes at the moment)

Yep the famous lidl protein rolls.... http://nuutrii.com/article/lidl-protein-bread-rolls-review I slice them into 3 and freeze them , and they are cheap as chips at the moment @ 29p each
