Hi

Just wondering - is the microalbumin urine test something that Type 1s should get? If so how often do you do it? Also is it sent off to a lab or is it something your GP tests in the surgery?

Thanks
Goji

Testing for microalbumin, is on of the dip tests they do on your urine sample when you go to clinic, sometimes they may ask you to do a 24 hour collection of your urine to test further at the lab but this is dependant if they find any or how much they find..

Now hospital clinics, actually use a machine to read the dip test strips rather than the old fashioned match the colour by eye method!! Which of cause gives more accurate information and results

I know that at my doctor surgury, they've just implemented a yearly request of all there diabetics, even though I have one every time I go to the hospital clinic!

Mircoalbumin are indicators but not proof of kidney damage, there are various ways the tests can be unintentionally fooled (semen, expelled drugs, etc) as they simply test the amount of protein in the urine. The 24h of **** tests are more accurate and from memory I think they should be around or below the 2.5mg / day mark (not certain).

And you'd be surprised how much urine someone actually makes in a day! Litres!

especially when in hospital when first diagnosed! and glucose levels still high!
But yes, I do a microalbumin spot test yearly.
