hi everyone,

I recently got my blood work done and while my fasting and Hba1c were around 6.5,my CBC readings were as follows....

RBC-----------high at 6
MCV----------low at 68
MCHC--------low at 304
haemoglobin was just within normal [12.2]

Though the lab suggested further iron test including ferritin ,my doctor wanted to wait it out for another 3 months. My google search showed these readings could be thalassemia minor or microlytic anaemia which can be caused due to chronic disease. I am also hypothyroid and on low dose medication.

Have any of you had these readings and what are your thoughts. Thanks in advance !

Can't hypothyroid cause those readings as well?

I get ferritin tested for hemachromotosis which is a genetic disease that usually does not cause problems for women until they hit menopause. It can be managed by blood draws as needed to reduce iron levels.

Don't stress about it-doctor would be telling you if you needed treatment right away.

Thanks SWUSA .My thyroid readings were normal.I was also expecting problem with the thyroid because I am also experiencing lot of hair fall lately. But my doc missed the ferritin and I have to wait for 3 months If the cause turns out to be mal absorption of iron ,the reason should be found out. Don't need more issues than I already have.!

The condition I have, hemochromatosis, is over absorption of iron. Some medicines can cause more than usual about of hair falling out. Stress can cause hair loss in some people too. If you are just low iron from dietary reasons that is a fairly easy fix and fairly common for young women.
