I had my first classical migraine at the age of ten or so, so I've more than plenty practice in dealing with them. After years of diet watching, it occurred to me that the common scenarios were for me to be extremely anxious about something, very, very tired, especially emotionally, or to be very short of sleep. The current wave of migraine meds in the shops does nothing for me except scare the whatsit out of me <the -triptan family, now, I gather available over the counter> One pill would stop the attack within fifteen minutes during which I ran through all stages of the attack like I was on fast forward. And eight hours later it started up again. I'll get the pro-drome feeling, where I know a migraine is going to happen within a few days. During that phase I consciously try to take things easy, get shopping and cooking out of the way and so on. That way I'm pretty relaxed when the aura itself comes (for me it's like a patch of my vision is looking through running water, always below and left of where the focus of my vision is but soon expanding to take up about 50% of vision. It's at this stage I'm most like to feel most anxious, so I tend to have a valium, and if there's some in the house, <I am not a doctor and cannot advise this as a medical treatment> a large gin or whisky helps. I lie down and wait for the aura to end, which it usually does within the hour. At this point I've got about an hour free of pain, just feeling a bit icky, so I fit in all the things like walking B'Elana, cancelling dinner with the Queen and so on. Then comes the pain - I try to be asleep for this, or at least severely anaesthetised. Twelve or sixteen hours later comes the aftermath which can last up to five days, and the only way I've found to deal with it is to warn people I meet that I 'm coming out of a severe migraine and feel a little confused. Sometimes I even tell them that I've had to take extra valium to deal with it, as people tend to more accepting of prescription drug haziness than they do of innate haziness... Hope there are some ideas in all this that work for you... Steve
