Does anyone else find that a vlcd eg the ND triggers their migraines? I have been doing ND for nearly 4 weeks now (a lenient version with 900 - 1000 cals) and the last few days especially I have had migraines every day.

It may well do - my hubby not diabetic did the 5:2 diet a couple of years ago and had to stop. He gets very severe migraines- think unconscious, needs morphine, looses 2 days of his life - he had to stop because the day after his fast days (600 cals) he would get one of his migraines and be very ill for a couple of days - great weight loss but just wasn't worth it.

He was doing 2 fast days then because he was ill not eating at all for 2 days a complete vicious circle lol

Thank you. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one> You have lost an impressive amount of weight. How did you do it?

No I've found just the opposite as have a number of other people, and there was a thread about this last year. I suffered chronic migraines since my early teens with various, including food related, triggers. I suffer very few now (mainly stress and weather related) and the food related ones have more or less completely stopped since I started LCHF over three years ago. I can actually enjoy in moderation some of the foods such as dark chocolate and blue cheese that I've previously had to avoid.

I don't seriously fast, but if I remember correctly Kevin Potts who started that thread, did. So it may depend on what you're eating or the ingredients in any shakes you might be using - I'm pretty sure that certain additives in my pre-LCHF diet also did me in !

It's also worth doing a search too (here and Google) on low carb/Atkins/keto "flu" as cutting right down on carbs after eating a high carb diet can cause withdrawal symptoms (including headaches) for a while. Drinking plenty of fluids and making sure that you are getting enough minerals (salt, magnesium, potassium) as you will probably be weeing more and your kidneys will be flushing more of these out.

I don't do a vlcd but I do suffer from ocular migraines, particularly when I haven't eaten. I added an extra magnesium supplement (my bottle specifically states take 2 for migraine relief) a few months ago & haven't had one since.

I'm very suspicious of food additives - especially artificial sweeteners. I seem to have a tolerance level and once exceeded, I start getting the visual disturbances that tell me a migraine is coming. If you're doing the ND using shakes, it could be something in those. My kryptonite is chewing too much sugarless gum.
