Milk ??

As I'm now carb counting I just wondered what other people do regarding drinking milk.

The type I have is about 4.7 carbs per 100ml all of which are sugars. So what do you do ?

Do you have a jab of bolus (quick acting) insulin or just no insulin because it's all sugar that will spike your blood lvls knowing they will soon return to normal ?

For me it would all depend on how much exercise I had done or was about to do, and how my blood sugar was. But, if I was having a lazy day and my sugars were good I would bolus for it if it was going to be more than 10g of carbs. Obviously for the milk in your tea or coffee the basal takes care of it. Lacto free milk has less sugar but is a bit more expensive.

Agree. If i was drinking a pint of milk with biscs or something then def bolus.

Lactofree has vertually no carbs and lasts a month at a time (doesnt go off) if you dont use that much - also its often on offer at a pound. thats the way I've gone.

Rule of thumb is that you don't have to bolus for <10g carbs - I.e. tea/coffee is fine but if you have a susbtantial amount of milk (e.g. Cereal) then you should include it in your bolus.

Although I rarely drink it on its own I just bolus for the amount taken, in cereal I do count the milk along with everything else in order to get the insulin dose right. The lacto-free milk that Engineer mentions is very nice and around half the carbs of normal milk.
