Minor Foot Injury Question

I did something really intelligent this morning. I got up in the night, and stepped on my belt buckle. The immediate effect of this was a lot of pain, and the reminder of just how many swear words I have learned during my life. Now, I am wondering if I should give my foot any special treatment on account of my diabetes. A small blood blister has formed in the centre of my foot. It's not very painful, and could be easily ignored. My Type 1 diabetes is well controlled and I have no signs of neuropathy. Should I just let it heal on its own, or do I need to put some form of cream on it? Any advice appreciated, thanks

When you damage yourself from time to time, do you heal normally?

That is the main guide line - poor healing is normally associated with poor BG control.
However, keep a close eye on it (if you are flexible enough to see the bottom of your feet) and if you see anything untoward go and have it checked at your local surgery.
Better safe than sorry.

Cheers

I would check it carefully for broken skin. If there is any, cover it. The sole of the foot is prone to infection (as it's so close to the dirty floor). If there's no broken skin I'd have a good look at it. I'd be tempted to take a pic on my phone, with something next to the bruise, so that I can assess progress over the coming days (is the bruise betting bigger/smaller?) I'd then make a mental agreement with myself to check it daily.

If I saw anything freaky, I'd go to the podiatry walk-in clinic.

Finally, I'd deliver a memo to self; not to repeat the error!

Cheers people, sound advice. I can look at my sole no problem, there's no broken skin. I heal fine usually, but it's been about 13 years since I last injured my foot. My last HBA1C was 34, so I think I should be all good. Good call keeping a visual log, I will monitor and act accordingly.

Erm,.......... Don't ask me how I know about taking a photo with a calibration object.

Or the podiatry walk-in clinic.......

Most damage occurs if you have neuropathy, and lose sensation, so don't realise you have done any damage., or if blood flow is reduced, in which case healing is inhibited.

If you have no complications, you should normally be ok.

I stuck a rusty nail through the bottom of my foot, right the way through to the top.
Sadly, it bent on a bone about halfway in, and wouldn't come out easily.
(It was also attached to a plank of wood, which the ambulance man had to cut off with a borrowed saw)
The hospital pulled it out eventually, after a few x rays to see where the bend was.

,They gave me an injection of an immunoglobulinimm, which was about the only special requirement for a type 2, with no complications that would otherwise adversely affect recovery.

It wasn't actually painful, and was quite funny, even at the time!

So I reckon you'll get away with this one.

Oh, I just had a black spot at the bottom of my toenail, with no recollection of any injury.

I was recommended to have it looked at; hence podiatry clinic. The nice lady there didn't actually call me a numpty, but recommended taking pics to ensure the bruise grows out. It's half way out now.

I'll chalk that one up to experience.

Bet you wish you hadn't asked after all.

Wow, yeah this was nowhere near as dramatic as that! Thanks for the advice.

Lol, I might have been left wondering for ever more otherwise.

The 999 response was even more dramatic.
I had the first responders out, followed by the paramedic in the car, followed by an ambulance.
4 emergency crew, in 3 vehicles, p**sing themselves laughing and playing tug of war with my foot, before deciding it was stuck, then cutting the plank down so I could fit through the ambulance door.
I got some funny looks sitting in A&E as well.

They couldn't decide how to get it out, as the theatres were full, and I didn't seem to have a great priority, then I suggested pulling really really hard may be worth a try, then they were queuing up for a go.
It didn't really hurt, but stuffing the ear bud in to try to clean the wound out did.
(I'm allergic to gas and air)

Still funny though.
