Recently was changed to novo 30 a mixed insulin but it seems to want to stay clumpy and need to shake quite firmly to mix it,had new script and that is the same so is this normal?

Yes. The long acting and the rapid acting seperate out naturally. You have to shake mixed pens to get the solution milky white. Didn't your medical people tell you how to use it?
 
Was told to roll and gently invert to remix but really have to shake quite hard

Shake slowly until you're satisfied? J shake my NPH cloudy insulin 30 times, but slowly so as not to break the mechanism. FWIW.
