Type of diabetes
Type 1
is there a chance i may have this type of diabetes? i was diagnosed at 17 (13 year ago) as type 1 but now doctors think i may have type 2 due to antibody test, they came back negative im left in limbo now till end of march has anybody had the same trouble?

Hello Kell

I too had an antibody test and they misread the results, thought there were antibodies when there were not. I didn't fit any criteria for type 2 but now they think it more likely to be type 2. However, the presence of antibodies or not does not eliminate t1 , a person can have type one without antibodies. MODY could also be a possibilty, some people are even a combination of both.

They say you can also have a c peptide test, i however have not had this. So I don't actually know what type i am so I just follow a healthy lifestyle in order to keep my sugars normal (with close monitoring of course).

Hope you get to the bottom of it..........

According to this paper some of the antibodies may not be present after a number of years but
GAD antibodies are usually persistent

I think that are a number of people with T1 type diabetes (ie ketosis prone and insulin deficient/absent) that don't have any detectable autoimmune antibodies.
This occurs in children and adults.
Here is a thread on a Joslin forum about a child with no antibodies .

(there are other similar threads in many forums, I used that one because it had a bit of a reply from an endo)
As you can see non autoimmune T 1 is called T1b. The most well known type of this is a type in which the absolute need for insulin sometimes goes into periods of remission, It is most often found in people of African and Asian origin but there have also been a few cases reported in Caucasians (and is sometimes called ketosis prone T2)
If you google T1b or atypical T1 you will find cases.
Here's one example:

There is an experimental MODY info and a probability calculator here.

What ultimately matters is whether you are receiving the correct treatment, does your doctor think that you might be able to manage without insulin ?
.

my GAD antibodies were negative ive been having hypo after hypo and now my insulin has reduced im still having hypos im gping for a synacthen test tomorrow... ive never heard of a young type 2 so i thought MODY might be an option to look at
