I've just got my monitor thing and am trying to work out how to use it effectively.

If I test 2 hours after eating, is that 2 hours after I've finished everything? I often eat then about an hour later have a piece of fruit or square of dark chocalate - should it be 2 hours after that or after my main meal?

I've only done a couple of tests but as far as I can work out, my results make me wonder if I've been misdiagnosed. I was 6.1 yesterday evening and 8.2 after two hours. This lunchtime I was 5.7 before lunch and am yet to do my 2 hours post test.

My OGDD test was pretty unequivocal (and I really did try and wriggle out of the diagnosis) but I have been doing LCHF since then and been on Metformin (just raised dose to 2nd 500g a day, having left myself a week to get used to one dose).

I am confused and puzzled and would be very grateful for any wise words.

Many thanks

Hi,
check 2 hrs after main meals, for now maybe try not eating inbetween so you can get a definate reading, the numbers you have are very good which is what you want,
You need to check more as type 2s produce some insulin so at other times it may be different, hope you have these readings all the time..that would be fab;)

Thanks so much totsy.

Might it mean I was misdiagnosed in the first place though? I was 10.7 fasting and 120 minutes after disgusting glucose drink I was 19.9

no i dont hunni, 19.9 is more than a non diabetic would be

I doubt it with those numbers. Mine was similar to yours, 9.1 fasting (never did the glucose test) and an HbA1c of 94 (or something like that. Have you lost a reasonable amount of weight? You have obviously changed your diet which will have had a dramatic change to your numbers and well done for that. You are also on metformin which will help your cells react to the insulin and therefore keep your numbers down as well as stop your liver producing as much glucose over night

I always count the hours at the times I start to eat but spreading your meal complicates the understanding of the numbers you see but may help you to not spike too high in the long run. If you exercise within that period between tests you will also pull your glucose levels lower, eg walking up and down my stairs 20 times (260 steps takes 10 minutes) is enough to pull down my glucose levels by 2.5 mmol (I have profiled my levels so much my wife keeps her pins in the ends of my fingers)

I know how you feel, I was diagnosed diabetic a month ago. The shock hasn't settled with me either. I found that it took 3 weeks for the metformin to start to work

Thank you totsy, jack412 and Andrew.

No, I've not lost a load of weight (wistful sigh) but I have cut carbs pretty much out of my diet so I guess that's it.

Sounds like I need to eat in clumps (as it were) rather than spreading it out in order to get a real idea of the impact on my blood sugar of what I've eaten.

And finally - totsy: ****. Was hoping I could leave this forum (no insult intended)!

Well if you do I expect your numbers will get even better then you really will begin to wonder if you have fixed it. Plus why would you want to leave a place that is such a wealth of knowledge, experience and support

Nooooooo, you misunderstand me! This forum is great - I wouldn't feel nearly so in control and genned up as I do without it. But I would prefer not to have diabetes in the first place - hence me saying that I had hoped there had been some error and I didn't have to worry about all of this.

lol I knew exactly what you meant. Was just poking fun :p
BTW exercise really is the way to bring those numbers even lower. I found 30 minutes after eating takes out all the spikes. Be careful with doing too much though (30 mins seems about the right amount to remove the glucose for me) as you will get your liver to dump glucose into your system which means you just have to do more and then you get thinner and thinner and it costs a fortune in new cloths (new suits/trousers/shirts and I already have thinned beyond them so will need another shopping trip in a few weeks o_O)

If your fasting level was that high they were wrong do the test. It is only done when fbg is 7 or below. And yes, you are diabetic.

As to eating, I think it is a good idea to stuff yourself until satiation when you plan to test. I am like you, often want a nibble an hour or so later but when I am testing I don't but note down the nibble-urge as it tells me I didn't have quite enough at the meal.

If you do have a little of something, go for a piece of very nice cheese as this will not affect your readings as much as fruit will.

Getting thinner and thinner sounds like hell - poor you! (Happy to take that chore away from you btw - please transfer all thinnifying my way)

How is you're doing this? 30 mins exercise a day and you suddenly shrink? I'm reasonably happy with my blood sugar levels but I've struggled all my life to lose weight so anything that gave that a kick-start would essentially be nirvana (not a sweaty, hairy 90s band)

lol I wish I could share my thiniffying :) I do a little more than 30 mins. I walk at lunch times and do an hour or more in the evening. I have also cut out nearly all wheat (may have a weetabix in the morning sometimes). My portion sizes have been reduced substantially. I have another 3 stone to go and my rate of loss has decreased so it will get harder and harder after then you can have my mojo I promise.

1 mojo, lightly worn..... Yes, am totally in the market for that!

Hi, very new diagnosed type 2 non medication. I am writhing about my husband , he is the one with it. Have been reading all the info on here and have learnt loads more than from the doctor or diabetic nurse. They refuse to give a glucose monitor, they say it is not needed he can control it by diet, gave all the arguments given on here and got nowhere. I said we wanted to avoid going on to medication for as long as we can because he is on shed loads for heart condition already and he he has a very low tolerance of them, she I formed us that we cannot avoid it, it is a disease that progresses and there is nothing we can do to stop it. Feel very depressed about that now.
She said we must only buy foods with a sugar content of under 5% . Well she wants to try it. There is so little under that.
Hope to be able to talk to you all , I am sure those that actually have the condition, must they really use the word disease ? Will be able to advise us far far better and not be living in cloud cuckoo land like the doctor and nurse seem too.
Cheers
Muffy1
