Hi, my husband has been diagnosed and on meteor in for a number of years, he hasn't looked after himself / taken tablets regularly etc despite encouragement from me and a nurse friend of ours until this years diabetes check at the doctors, I don't know what was said but all of a sudden he is checking blood sugar, taking meds, and trying to improve his diet. He has reduced his blood sugar levels which is good. But what we can't understand how his sugar levels can be higher first thing in the morning ( within 5-10 mins of waking ) than they were just before going to sleep. Can you shed any light on this please ?

It's called "Dawn Phenomenon".
It's part of the body's preparation for an active new day.
It happens in non-diaetics too, but of course for them it's not a problem. Just anecdotally, I suspect it's worst in people who have tended to run high.
