Hi, I am new to this and recently bought myself a glucose testing meter. I am a type 2, not on meds and trying to get on top of this via diet. My question is this. Why can I go to bed with a lower reading of say 6.5, but my morning fasting reading is always high at about 8 to 9? I am really puzzled by this and I have even started making sure I drink a glass of water before sleep but it does not seem to make much difference. Thanks

Hi welcome, Your blood sugar will drop during the night because you haven't eaten, your liver will feel the need to produce some glucose because it's worried about you, it's called a liver dump or the dawn phenomenon, it's normal, but still sucks.

Good luck

I'm not medically trained in anyway, this is just an opinion

This is due to the liver rush or dawn phenomenon and it puzzles most people at first.

If you don't eat for some time, say 5 or 6 hours you would be very low on sugar so your body provides some via the liver. It's like a back up store to tide you over.

The reason it is sometimes called the dawn phenomenon is because most people don't eat over night and so get a liver rush in the morning,
