Hi there,

We are monitoring our 4yr old son for a potential diagnois of diabetes. He hates the finger pricks so much. It feels cruel to inflict him with it but I know that if we gather enough data the hospital will be able to start medication and his life will be improved.

I'm not sure when the alarm bells should be ringing for me and I have so many questions.

His fluctating energy levels are hard on him (and us).

Does anyone know if becoming very tired is a symptom?

Hi Yes tiredness is one of the symtoms of diabetes, also weightloss, thirst and urinating frequentley, bless him i hope he gets on ok, it must be hard for you having to prick his finger to test his blood especially when he hates it being done.

Good Luck

Thanks, its a complete pain. I read a comment on another board saying that its inhumane to test little kids but he's really not himself and I want to avoid another hospital stay.

Our GP doesn't seem very clued up and when he's not flat out vommiting and dehydrated it seems OTT to contact the hospital.

I think I'm going to have to ask for a referal to someone who can give us a straight answer

Hi yes i think asking to be refered would be a good idea, have you had a look on the DIABETES U.K website they have some very interesting info on there about type 1 and type 2 diabetes, i think there is a helpline phone number you could contact they maybe able to advise you of what to do, when it your child it can be very frustrating when no one seems to be bothered or tells you that theres nothing to worry about but a mother knows when there child is not right.

Let me know how you get on, i do hope you get the help and care you need for your son, keep in touch.
