Mounjaro question

Hi everyone,

I'm T2, diagnosed in Nov 2020, unfortunately not well controlled due to my mental health issues and having a herniated disc in my back causing me to be in agony for over 4 months. I'm feeling a good bit better now but I know my diabetes is bad, getting burning sensations in my foot which I think may be neuropathy related and I've had a persistant UTI which will not go away, going to Dr's next week to discuss with them, I'm terrified for my kidneys but I know I'll need to have blood tests to see how things are.

I've been seriously considering going on to Mounjaro to help me lose some of the excess weight, I know now through experience with this I can't stop the unhealthy eating without some sort of medical help, does anyone have any experience with this medicine, is it worth it and does it work, will it bring blood sugars down on it's own?

I know I'll have to pay privately for it and am prepared to do this if it will help me to get this horrible disease under control, I just feel awful with it now and I know I need to do something. Obviously I'm going to speak to my GP about it as well but I'm not sure how unbiased they will be about these weight loss drugs they're not prescribing themselves. Thanks for any advice on this.

I can’t comment on Mounjaro as I’ve never used it but I do take Rybelsus (semaglutide) tablets, the same medication as Ozempic. Along with a low carb diet it has enabled me to keep my HbA1c at non diabetic levels and I have lost a significant amount of weight, slowly but surely. In your position I would ask your GP if you can have Mounjaro on prescription. It’ll help your diabetes and weight loss. If your BMI is at or over 35 it’s possible to get it on the NHS, so you shouldn’t have to source it privately, which will cost you money and you will also risk getting a fake or dangerous product on line.

Thanks so much for your reply and advice, I'm in Scotland and I'm not sure they're prescribing mounjaro here, if I was buying it privately I'd only use a reputable pharmacy site for it. I have an appt for bloods to be done tomorrow then appt with DN on Monday to discuss the results (which I don't think will be good).

Can I ask how you've found the Rybelsus for blood sugar management and weight loss? I was put on the starting dose of it last year but my GP took me off it because my mental health was very bad and I was struggling with the side effects. Thankfully I'm doing much better with that now, and I know I need to focus on my physical health, particularly getting back onto a low carb diet to shift this excess weight, I have done it before when I was first diagnosed so I know it works for me, just may need a little help now from medication to do this.

Does Rybelsus work on its own or does it have to be taken with something else like Metformin? Thanks again for any advice on this, would like to be up to speed before I speak to the DN.

I’ve been on Rybelsus for just coming up to a year. I have been very lucky with not getting unwanted side effects. I say unwanted as I have felt a change in my appetite and how quickly I feel full at meal times which means I’m eating smaller portions. In that year I have lost about 9kg.
 
I've been on Mounjaro for around 10 months. I've lost a lot of weight. I was 11st 7 and am now 9st 7. It certainly is the only thing that has ever worked for me. It has lowered my blood sugars to pre diabetes levels from 65 to 43. So yes it works to lower blood sugars. Mainly I suspect because you are eating far far less. In fact you sometimes have to force yourself to eat. The dose that works for me was 10mg which I was on but because i'm now in the healthy weight range and sugars are good they have suddenly cut it to 5mg. (I get it on nhs). This is the one downfall of getting it from your GP. My appetite has returned with a vengeance as I knew it would and I suspect my sugars are also creeping up again. I have had many 'debates' with the diabetes nurse and don't understand why i'm on such a low maintenance dose when 5mg never worked for me before. They said because nhs doesn't give it just for weight and your sugars are good. Seems hard for them to understand that my sugars will go right back up again once my appetite returned. It all feels like a waste of time to me and I can't afford it privately. I'm thinking of taking 2 5mg twice a month to make the 10 but not sure what will happen in the 2 weeks of the month i have nothing.
 
I've just refused to go on Mounjaro for the reasons you stated natzmum, I need to sort my eating out again but bloods have been weird. Had a drop in cholesterol, bs and the other one they tested (can't remember) but I can't think of anything dietary that I've done differently.

I can confirm they are not ! They are prescribing duff reasoning and advice (hence my A1c of 60 is described as perfect) and told that using blood glucometer when I feel iffy, or if I suspect a food is sending my BG skywards, was just causing me anxiety and I should stop. I am after Mounjaro but it might as well be Mount Kilimanjaro.
 
I would love an A1c of 45. Mine was 120, but apparently 56-60 is perfectly fine for me (I disagree)
