Moving to Canada. How do i get my insulin?

If you’re looking to move to Canada with a pre-existing medical condition, such as diabetes which is covered on the form, you need to be aware of your rights and potential cost.

Conditions such as diabetes would not qualify directly for the free Canadian health care system although ultimately if you do have some kind of seizure or attack then you would obviously receive treatment.

However, for those who require medicine and prescriptions on a regular basis, there is every chance that you will need to cover the cost of this yourself – assuming you have no private health care insurance in place.

I would suggest that you contact the Local Health Care Authority in the Province or Town where you will be going. They should be able to give you 'chapter and verse' on what you can get free and what you will have to pay for whilst you are there.

Does whoever you are going to Work for have Health Care Insurance that will cover you as an Employee, or is this a social visit.........?

Noticed you said you're only going for a year. Someone I met online has gone travelling round the world for a year and she has taken a years worth of supplies with her. When you say you aren't getting any help from your clinic/doc, what did they say when you told them, surely they would have an obligation to give you some advice on what supplies you can take with you? My friend got her supplies sorted out through her DSN.

I may be wrong but i'm sure i've read recently that the NHS is not allowed to give you or supply you with medication if you're going to be out of the UK for more than 3 months, ie you can take 3 months worth with you but it would be down to you to source your own medication after that. Like i said i may be wrong and unfortunately i cant remember where i read this.

Peecee.....you are not wrong. That is what usually happens unless you can persuade your Doc to do something different. It can happen.

If you manage to get a bulk supply it still leaves you with the problem of carriage, correct storage and possible damage to Insulin etc whilst being carried. I would have thought it was far easier and safer to arrange things locally whilst you are there.

If I had to take 12 months worth of Meds which includes pens with me I would need a small truck !!
Let alone a suitcase. :lol: (OK....I might have exaggerated a bit) :wink:
