Type 2 Moving to North Wales

Hi I am living in the west of Ireland and, in spite of the problems with the Irish healthcare system, I get pretty good help from my GP and local hospital clinic. Currently, my diabetes is well controlled, last HbA1c was 40, down from last 41. I am on 2 metformin 850 g per day, to be reduced to 2 x 500 g metformin. All medication, including lancets and testing trips and all over medication, is free for diabetics. It is possible that I will be moving to North Wales in the next 12 months and I am anxious to find out the situation in that part of the world from other people with Type 2 diabetes. For example, are doctors/hospitals happy to prescribe lancets and testing strips, which I regard as being essential? Are there specialised hospital clinics or are people with diabetesmanaged by local GPs? And, do local GPs give good attention to this condition?

I would really welcome any input from people in the area, as it will form a big part in my decision making. Thanks a lot!

Hi Barry, I live in north Wales and have to say that the service and care I receive from both the GP and the diabetic care centre at the hospital has been excellent, I was diagnosed as type 1 around 3 years ago and have struggled to get to grips with it all, they have been very helpful, patient and understanding.

I have no problems with getting meters, strips, lancets, medication etc.

There is also a very good local support group which I know many attend, I don't go due to time issues and work etc.

Hope this helps a bit

I'm afraid many people have said that their GP refuse to prescribe strips etc for type 2's ,it seems that for financial reasons, surgeries routinely inform that "testing is not necessary for non insulin Dependant diabetics".

Thanks for your responses. Babybel, it seems from this forum that many GPs are not prescribing strips for type 2.s. I can't understand this - I've been to educational classes run by trained diabetic nurses and they all emphasise the importance of regularly checking sugar levels - i.e. at least daily. I know that I've found this invaluable as I've strived to reduce my levels, which has been quite successful, along with losing weight. Now, I'm on the verge of 'normality' and I don't want to slip back.

My likely destination is Llandudno and I was hoping that there may be someone from that town who has experience with a specific GP and can point me in the right direction.

Been a little while since this last post but now move seems to becoming more a reality. We're due to visit Llandudno at the end of this month on a house reccy and will probably call in at the local health centre to see what the situation will be. Any other ideas welcome!
