Hi guys,

So I saw my GP this morning because I've been having some problems with my legs. He will be sending me for an MRI scan and I'm a little concerned about Dexcom sensor. My doc said it's fine to keep it in, but I'm not sure he was aware what it was exactly...

The Dexcom user guide says that you're supposed to remove the sensor before the scan because they haven't tested it, so they don't know if that's going to be a problem. Obviously the sensor is mostly plastic, but there is a small metal part inside and the transmitter has metal inside as well (I'm guessing).

I'm not very keen on removing my sensor, so I wanted to know if anyone had the scan or anything similar done and knows if that's really necessary :arghh:

Hi Paulina

I have had a few MRI scans on my legs. I use Medtronic sensors but the advice should be the same. The first time I did remove my sensor, luckily the scan coincided with the day my sensor needed replacing. Since then I have tried to arrange a time when I know I will be needing to replace the sensor so leave it out and just remove my pump. I did ask the person doing the scan if I could have left it in, he said that it should be alright to leave in as the scan was on my lower legs and the transmitter/sensor was in my stomach and wouldn't be going into the scanner.

The sensor manufacturers obviously want to protect their products from damage as do we Can you try and arrange a date for the scan when you would be changing to a new sensor and leave it out for that time? Ask the MRI department for advice about whether they consider it safe to leave in.

Thanks Flowerpot. The scan is probably going to be of my back and legs, so it will be in the area of the sensor (I think) :( Well, I'll see when they schedule my scan and see how that corresponds with my sensor. Thanks for the advice!
