RIP Cassius
Even so, it's the name I first knew him by so that's the one I'll remember. I don't even know why he objected to it. Cassius Clay the historical figure fought slavery didn't he? And Cassius itself means 'vain'......I'm not sure he would have appreciated that sentiment.
"Cassius Clay is a slave name. I didn't choose it, and I didn't want it. I am Muhammad Ali, a free name, and I insist people using it when speaking to me and of me."
He was one of the most influential people of the 20th century, which for a mere "sportsman" is quite an achievement.
